Online Gambling PhD > Baccarat History
The casino gambling game of
Baccarat dates back to the
middle ages. Some say it was originally played with a Tarot
deck. Introduced in Italy, it quickly found a home among the
wealthy aristocracy in France. Further evolution of the game
suggests it split to European Baccarat and a French game
named 'Chemin de Fur'.
Chemin de Fur, being very similar to
Baccarat, is played in American gambling casinos today. The only real
difference is that when playing Chemin de Fur one of the
players banks the game instead of the casino. The title of
banker rotates around the table in a system similar to the
dice at a craps table. An interesting thing to take note of
is that the gambling casino assumes no risk by having players banking
the game. They simply make their money by charging each
player a fee when they are titled the banker.
The Baccarat we know and play currently
emanated in Great Britain and was then conveyed to South
America and eventually to Nevada. The first place to
introduce Baccarat in Nevada was the notorious Dunes casino
in the late 1950's. Since then it has successfully made its
way to online gambling casinos.
Overseas baccarat has a saga as well. This
is quite evident with its popularity among the Asian
population visiting Las Vegas annually. Even the highest of
high rollers make their trek all the way from overseas to
take a chance playing Baccarat under the glitz and glamour
that Las Vegas bestows. Near Hong Kong in the Portuguese
territory of Macao, the ever present popularity of Baccarat
is unparalleled. Portuguese tables have even been known to
allow multiple players to bet on a single spot at the same
time, while the masterful and skilled dealer has to mentally
keep track of each players commission on winning bank bets.
