Maine finds candidate
for board exec.
October 13
On Tuesday in Maine,
officials announced that
they asked
retired deputy police
chief in Bangor, Robert
P. Welch, to serve as
executive director of
the new Maine Gambling
Control Board.
Welch ,
who is likely to be
confirmed, once a
background check is
complete , by the
five-member board at its
next meeting. If
confirmed, he would
start his new job on
Nov. 29.
Welch was one of 34
applicants for the
position. He retired
from his position with
the police in 2002. He
was with the force for
25 years.
The Maine Gambling
Control Board was formed
by the Legislature
earlier in the year to
oversee the new slot
machines voters have
allowed to be
implemented at harness
racing tracks in Maine.
The only locally
approved racetrack
casino is to be run at
Bangor Raceway. There,
Penn National Gaming
Inc. plans to implement
some 1,500 new slot
machines.
