uthorities
have detained
a total of 597 people in
connection with
an underground
Internet
gambling network
thought to
contain money
totaling over
$60 million.
This report
comes as a
nationwide
clean-up on
unauthorized
gambling is
taking place
there.
The Ministry of
Security said
the gambling
network,
spanning 22
provinces and
major cities,
was allegedly
run by a
Taiwan-based
company in
collaboration
with criminal
associates on
the Chinese
mainland.
A total of 395
people alleged
to be forming
the network and
202 alleged
gamblers have
been held.
In Shanghai, it
is being
reported that
police held 87
people though to
be involved in
the gambling
ring.
In nearby Jiangsu,
106 people were
held and $20
million in
gambling money
and alleged
gambling profits were
apprehended.
Last week, China
stared a
campaign against
gambling that targets overseas
gambling, online
gambling and
illegal
lotteries.
State-authorized
lotteries,
hugely spred
throughout
China,
actually are
not affected by
the ban. Private gambling
activities in
people's homes
is not affected
either.
