Big Trouble With Online Gambling In China

January 27

In China, authorities have detained a total of 597 people in connection with an underground Internet gambling network thought to contain money totaling over $60 million.

This report comes as a nationwide clean-up on unauthorized gambling is taking place there.

The Ministry of Security said the gambling network, spanning 22 provinces and major cities, was allegedly run by a Taiwan-based company in collaboration with criminal associates on the Chinese mainland.

A total of 395 people alleged to be forming the network and 202 alleged gamblers have been held.

In Shanghai, it is being reported that police held 87 people though to be involved in the gambling ring. In nearby Jiangsu, 106 people were held and $20 million in gambling money and alleged gambling profits were apprehended.

Last week, China stared a campaign against gambling that targets overseas gambling, online gambling and illegal lotteries.

State-authorized lotteries, hugely spred throughout China, actually are not affected by the ban. Private gambling activities in people's homes is not affected either.

However, the very popular custom of betting while playing cards and the traditional game of mahjong with friends and relatives is regarded as a form of entertainment and not subject to the gambling crackdown campaign.
