AK legislation
to
expand
electronic
wagering
moves
forward
March 19
In
Arkansas,
t he
House
Rules
Committee
sanctioned
legislation
to
expand
electronic
gambling
at two
Arkansas
racing
facilities.
The
tracks
involved
are the
Oaklawn
Park
horse
race
track in
Hot
Springs
and
Southland
Greyhound
Park at
West
Memphis.
The
committee
sent the
measure
to the
House
for
final
legislative
proceedings.
With a
voice
vote,
the
panel
passed
the bill
allowing
local
elections
in the
two
Arkansas
cities
with
race
track
betting
to allow
more
electronic
games of
skill at
the
tracks.
Those
in favor
said the
measure,
which
ran
through
the
Senate
two
weeks
ago, is
vital to
the
Arkansas
tracks'
ability
to
compete
with
gambling
facilities
in
neighboring
states.
Supporters
also say
the
measure
would
boost
jobs and
tourism
in the
area.Possibly
bringing
up to
$30
million
in
earnings
to the
state
and
local
government
allowing
the
tracks
to
better
compete
with
competitors
and
survive
the
competition.
Those
in favor
also
doubt
claims
that the
bill
would
open the
door to
video
poker,
video
slots
and
other
casino-type
games in
Arkansas.
