In Delaware,
a cluster of
developers are
recommending a
50-acre
waterfront
gambling resort
that would bring
thousands of
jobs and just as
many slot
machines to the
eastern part of
Wilmington.
In order fore
the prospect to
come to light,
supporters are
designing
legislation to
increase
gambling at
sites, such as
the proposed
casino, not
coupled to a
racetrack. The
1994 law that
legalized slot
machines in
Delaware
mandates that
they be
constrained to
sites associated
to the horse
racing industry.
The
developers are
alluring
Wilmington
officials with
the promise of a
percentage of
the gambling
proceeds. It is
estimated that
the proceeds
could net
millions for the
city which is
currently in
dire need of
revenue.
The name of
the planned
casino is
Diamond Casino
Resort and it
would be located
on Wilmington's
Seventh Street
Peninsula along
the Christina
River and cost a
reported $300
million to
build. The
proposal
includes plans
for up to 4,000
slot machines in
several
different types
of settings, a
400-room hotel,
restaurants, a
dinner theater,
shops and a
marina available
to the public.
