UK gambling site halted by Harrah's

March 3

Harrah's has shut-down an online gambling site in the United Kingdom after losses of well over $9 million from 2004.

This is not the first time a large Las Vegas casino company has failed to succeed in the booming Internet gambling sector. MGM Mirage did the same in 2003.

The failing online gambling site involved, Lucky Me, was put online late in 2003. It was designed for UK bettors and was reportedly halted back in October of 2004, just under a year from it's inception. The news came during Harrah's yearly report to its shareholders two days ago..

It is thought that perhaps the actual method of gambling on Lucky Me lead to its demise. Instaed of betting for money with money each hand or game, Lucky Me let players play as many games as they wanted at a rate of new games being offered just about every 7 minutes, with a monthly subscription. Members shelled-out anywhere from $17 to $84 per month for unlimited access to online games like bingo with cash prizes worth anywhere between just over 8 dollars to $1.7 million.

Harrah's created  Lucky Me with Revahertz Networks (Boston), a software game company. Many know Revahertz as the company that started Gamesville, a games-for-prizes site that was sold to Lycos almost 6 years ago.

Many speculate that this has something to do with Harrah's backing-out of the possibility to build a casino in the UK. Harrah's says no, one has nothing to do with the other.
