Message sent to lottery winners - pay your child support

May 25

Yesterday, New York revealed that it has already removed nearly $5 million from thousands of lottery winnings before they were awarded to winners and paid the money right to delinquent child-support situations. The state also removed portions of winner's money if they happened to be given welfare payments in the previous ten years. Some online gambling players think its a good idea.

Online gambling winners asked about this story mostly agree. They feel that if they were to win a large amount of money at an online casino, they would be willing to pay back what was rightfully due to their own children.

New York's Lottery Intercept Program has already filtered nearly $10 million in winnings to child support.

One fine example is from 2004, when a winner from New York City won $175,000 in a lottery game. New York removed $31,000 of the winners money because the person had received that much in state aid in the last decade.

In the economic year that terminated at the end of  March, it is reported that $711,660 in winnings from more than 1,050 people were seized for child support.

The amounts diverted keep on growing since the idea was hatched in 1995.

The generalization here is that if a winner who has been assisted by the state in the last ten years is lucky enough to gain a wind-fall of lottery winnings, they should pay the state back. The very same goes for delinquent child-support. Seems pretty fair right?
