| GamblingPhD menu | And the Underdog Is April 27, 2008 It just goes to show you that when you think someone is out of their league and taking on too much responsibility you could be completely wrong. Many thought that US Congressman Barney Franks Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, or IGREA, would never gain momentum, nor see the light of day but they would be wrong. It seems that as the bill gets stronger and more people sign onto it, anti online gambling groups are getting more nervous about the possibilities. Frank has seen a lot of people steadily turn towards the IGREA and put their weight and support behind it something those that dont want online gambling legalized dont want to see. Those that are opposed to online gambling keep bringing up the same arguments for making it illegal but are not addressing the fact that the industry would now be regulated. The protections that would be afforded those that participated in online gambling would be evident once the IGREA was passed. According to the Free Congress Research and Education Foundation, they say that online gambling is addictive and can destroy peoples lives. However, the only problem with that is that people can still go gambling, as they are not seeking to make it illegal everywhere, just online. Online gambling advocates say that the bill is the best of both worlds. It allows online gambling in the US, and it allows the US to monitor it. Back to April 2008 Archive. |
