| GamblingPhD menu | Online Gambling Arrest in Boston April 28, 2009 A federal court has decided that Arthur Gianelli, 51 of Boston, is guilty of online gambling and running a ring that perpetrated the illegal activity. The court said that Gianelli had been running an illegal online gambling sports betting and loan shark ring racketeering operation in Boston, and had unspecified online dealings as well. Gianelli kept great records of all of his dealings so that he knew exactly where all of the money from his online gambling and other businesses was going. Unfortunately, it is this attention to record keeping that ultimately ended up being his downfall. The records were used against him to solidify the case. State police had tapped his phones and were secretly recording all of his calls. These calls were in regards to arson, extortion, money laundering, online gambling, etc. Police used these calls along with his meticulous record keeping to build an air tight case against Gianelli. The jury found him guilty on all 333 counts after deliberating for four days. He, his wife Gisele Albertelli, and two associates Frank Iacaboni and Dennis Albertelli were all found guilty of the charges against them. The police and the prosecutors were thrilled that they were found guilty and taken off the streets. They say that by finding them guilty the jury took one of the largest online gambling and racketeering groups off of the streets of Boston, which will do a lot to reduce crime in the area. They say that this is simply the first step in their battle against organized crime, and they say that they see the steps that Gianelli has taken to get where he is and they say others follow the same path. Gianelli started with sports betting, then video poker machines, and then ultimately online gambling as well. Back to April 09 Archive. |
