| GamblingPhD menu | New Online Gambling Bill After Easter April 12, 2009 The new online gambling bill that we have all been waiting for from Rep. Barney Frank is seemingly finally on its way. The bill is supposedly having its coming out party after Easter, and online gambling enthusiasts cannot wait for it. Frank has been very clear all along that he is not abandoning the online gambling push, and will continue to work to make it legal. Now he has slated the release of his bill right after the mid session break in the second week of April. He was originally planning on releasing it at the end of March, but has been working hard to negotiate the stimulus bill at the same time. As Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank has been pulling many late niters trying to save our country from economic ruin. With the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, the wording was at many times unclear and confusing. While Frank is working on the other duties that he has, there is another group working on the wording of the online gambling bill. They want to be sure that there are no grey areas when it is passed, and no confusion as to what constitutes legal online gambling. The new bill has already been heralded as a great way to usher out the current UIGEA and should bring in money for the US government. It should also get us out of the hot water that we currently find ourselves in with the World Trade Organization and the European Union. With the latest online gambling report that was released by them, the US is facing some serious charges. However, if we legalize online gambling, then we will have dodged a very large bullet.
