| GamblingPhD menu | Still Waiting on Legislation April 29, 2009 Many in the online gambling community are starting to get concerned that they might be losing momentum in the fight to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA. They have been waiting for legislation that was promised them from Representative Barney Frank, and yet as the weeks have drawn on there has been no mention of this actually happening. Frank has postponed his release date several times now, and the online gambling is starting to get worried about their champion. Some say that he has been fighting so hard that he is simply burnt out at this point which is terrible because this is what he has been fighting for. Others say that there is language in the online gambling bill that is so complex that it will take time to go through all of it and ensure a smooth transition from one to the other. Frank has continued to say that he will be releasing legislation for the online gambling cause, but he has also said that he is just not ready to do so quite yet. This is concerning many because Frank had postponed it already, and now he was saying that he is still committed to passing the legislation, just not right now. He reiterated his support for allowing both online gambling and marijuana to be legalized, and said that these were things that should be left up to the individual not to the government. However, he did not say when the online gambling industry might see that bill. Back to April 09 Archive. |
