| GamblingPhD menu | Licensed Land Based Casinos May be Online Gamblings Biggest Threat April 11, 2009 The fact of the matter is that land based casinos and local gambling interests have much more at stake if online gambling is legalized than many other industries. Much emphasis is placed on Conservative America and it is expected that they will continue to put up a fight against the legalization of online gambling. However, it is not necessarily that group that the online gambling industry should be putting all of their focus on. Land based casinos are already suffering from the onslaught of online casinos, and as gas and hotel prices rise, it is expected that they will continue to lose money to the online casino industry. They are reporting across the board some of their lowest numbers ever, while online gambling interests continue to increase their revenue. Take for example the fact that California is currently looking to regulate intrastate online poker. They would like to see online gambling legalized within their state, and it looks as though they stand a real chance at that happening because they are basically a very liberal state. However, if established gaming interests in both California and neighboring states have anything to say about it, the bill will not be all that easy to pass. These established gaming interests are expected to donate heavily against the passage of the online gambling bill, as they know that they are losing enough money as it is and if online gambling is legalized within the state they will lose even more money than before. It is imperative that both online gambling supporters and intrastate supporters realize this and put some of their pressure in their direction instead of just towards the conservatives.
