| GamblingPhD menu | Swedish Online Gambling Rules Under Fire April 15, 2009 The European Gaming and Betting Association, or EGBA, has just come down very hard on Sweden for their online gambling rules and regulations. According to the EGBA, Sweden has a continuous lack of commitment to comply with European Union law and they have a real problem with that. Their report that came from the Swedish Ministry of Finance into the online gambling industry in the country says that Sweden is not complying with European Union Law and that they need to make changes to their online gambling rules and regulations. The EGBA has many members of the major online gambling groups as part of their membership says that it is deplorable the way that they have handled the situation. Currently Swedish online gambling legislation is in breach of European Commission laws. The EC first told them in October of 2006 that they were in breach of online gambling laws and that they needed to make changes in order to get into compliance with the EC. Then they sent other notices after that, but as of now the Swedish government has not changed the way that they do business. The initial report from the EGBA though shows that there are flaws in the reports that have come out before as they show that online gambling regulations are compliant with EC law which they are not. This latest report says that they have not met the basic requirements to make online gambling either legal or compliant and that changes must be made. Back to April 09 Archive. |
