Back in 1999, the Ewiiaapaayp signed
a state gambling compact and has been
vying for years to get federal approval
to construct a casino on a 10 acre piece
of land in Alpine, about a mile west of
the Viejas casino.
Before the newest developments, the
Viejas opposed Ewiiaapaayp's proposal.
The tribe and four others signed
revamped compacts in June, that allow
the state millions in added money in
exchange for unlimited slots. Viejas
officials have said they planned
initially to add only a few hundred
machines.
Currently, the largest gambling halls
are two Indian casinos in Connecticut.
Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. Those casinos
are about 10 miles apart and have
approximately 6,000 machines each for a
total of about 12,000 machines.
