Talks continue as Maryland slot
deadline closes in
August 3
In Annapolis, the governor's
budget secretary and house leaders came out of yet another
session of talks on the much debated subject of slot
machines on Monday with no agreement on a proposed amendment
to make slot machines legal in the state of Maryland. Though
no agreement has been forthcoming at this time, it is said
that talks will continue, at least for the time being.
House Speaker Michael Busch, who
is in favor of the slot machines and wants the proposed
constitutional amendment to go to voters, said that he
should know in approximately two weeks whether or not it
would be likely to call a special session of the Legislature
to try and get an amendment on this November's ballot.
Busch has said that he thinks
that this is probably the governor's last chance to achieve
or get something done as far as the slots are concerned
before next year.
Governor Robert Ehrlich's budget secretary, James DiPaula
said that he thinks a referendum is unnecessary and not
needed, and he has also said it would be looked at and
considered. He wants to see the bill in order to talk about
the nature of an implementation at a later time. |
