Talks held for casino near Disneyland

August 19

City officials in Garden Grove, California are said to have discussed plans to build a casino just outside Disneyland with an Indian tribe from San Diego Co. and developer Steve Wynn.

The city of Garden Grove, which is located in Orange Co., says that it is willing to sell off as much as 45 acres located in a redevelopment area to the Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians. The tribe has plans to build a casino resort with shopping, entertainment comparable to Vegas, and restaurants.

they feel that they have the opportunity to bring in the most premier resort developer to Orange County and create an attraction unlike anything else in California. With more to focus on than gaming, it is noted that the plans could have a better shot at actually coming to life.

City officials said they met with Wynn earlier this year to discuss the idea and had also pitched it to some of the governor's people. Wynn, whose former company built the Bellagio, Mirage and Treasure Island casinos in Las Vegas, said the meeting took place, but also said the talks were about ideas of ideas, not negotiations.

Casino industry analysts and local officials said they don't believe the deal would be approved. But the proposed land swap could work legally if the city and governor and other Indian tribes come to an agreement.
