Union tells new Aladdin owners how they feel
August 5
Yesterday, at The Aladdin on
The Strip in Las Vegas, union demonstrators told the would
be new owners of the Aladdin Hotel and Casino, or at least
gave a warning to them that they still want their union.
They still want a contract for their union.
One of the would be new
owners, Planet Hollywood's co-founder Robert Earl simply
replied saying that they didn't own the property just yet.
Earl and his partners intend to purchase the property and
turn the now bankrupt resort into a money maker.
A rally lasting about one
hour on the 2,567 room resort property on The Strip resort
was organized by representatives of Culinary Workers Union
Local 226.
This comes just days before
Earl and the other prospective partners Starwood Hotels and
Resorts Worldwide Inc. of White Plains, New York and Bay
Harbour Management LC, of New York, New York go before the
state gaming regulators for their very first appearance.
There are two such meetings
scheduled in Carson City this month, one on August 11, and
the other on August 26th. Earl hopes the meetings will
result in a licensing allowing them to move forward with
their purchase of the property. If all goes as planned, the
transition process from the Aladdin to its new prospective
name Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino could begin at the
beginning of September.
In the mean time, Robert Earl
has no comment on the union. Until they have full ownership,
he simply does not want presume any talks. The union vows to
continue applying pressure though.
Last year, the Union of
Needletrades held a similar rally attracting the attendance
of the Reverend Jesse Jackson.
Because of many rulings
regarding the company's treatment of their employees who
belonged to unions have taken place, officials of the Union
have held many rallies since the new prospective owners won
a $635 million bid on the resort in US Bankruptcy Court in
June 2003.
