Human Rights award goes to Bodog Music artist

August 25, 2006

Today, we take a moment to recognize a good deed done. In fact the only affiliation this online gambling news article has to do with playing at online casinos is that the woman featured in this article is an artist on a popular online gambling company’s music label.

We find this story to be encouraging and any online gambling site’s news article section should cover this news in order to draw more attention to humanitarian efforts being made by everyday heroes.

Iranian native Nazanin Afshin-Jam, who many know to be a Former Miss Canada and runner up in the Miss World contest is also humanitarian who we believe to be a true hero. In fact, she will be receiving a human rights award today in New York City for her work she has done in order to help save the life of a young Iranian woman who is just 17 years old.

She will be receiving the Hero Award for Human Rights. While accepting this well deserved award, she will talk in depth about her efforts in order to draw more attention to the fact that women and young females need equal rights in countries such as Iran where the young girl is from.

She essentially saved the 17 year old Iranian girl from being executed for defending herself and a 16 year old relative from being brutally raped. She was merely trying to stop three men from raping herself and her niece who was with her at the time. In Iran, women cannot defend themselves from men in this manor. Doing so is considered to be illegal and punishable by hanging.

This sad travesty unfortunately happens frequently in Iran and other countries where woman and young females do not have equal rights as men. We applaud such activists and humanitarians such as Afshin-Jam who do what they can and use their notoriety to bring such issues to light.

The young woman will not be executed at this time due a commuted sentance; however, she will be retried next week. After today’s award ceremony at the UN headquarters in NYC, there will be a celebration concert in Union Square Park. Any online gambling enthusiasts in the area should head to the park and take advantage of the celebration and attend the free concert.

Being an artist on the online casino brand Bodog’s music label, Afshin-Jam will be dedicating her first single and title track from her new album Someday to oppressed youth in Iran.

Handing the award to this selfless patron to human rights will be Actors Anne Archer and Jenna Elfman, who are actively involved in the organization as well.

As far as the concert goes, it will be held in Union Square from 7-9PM tonight. Anyone and everyone is free to attend. No word on Bodog’s stance on these efforts, but we think a nice donation to efforts would be called for.

In an effort to create better rights for oppressed human beings, Afshin-Jam was responsible for obtaining over 210,000 signatures on a Humanitarian petition striving to beat unfair treatment to women and children. She received recognition by the UN and will move ahead with further efforts in this area in her future. She was born in Iran and wishes to keep getting more signatures on her petition. She is determined to keep the young woman from death by hanging and with the resources she is scaring up, we think a positive outcome is on its way.
