South
Africa
Regulating
Online
Casinos
August
15,
2007
South
Africa’s
National
Assembly
is
changing
the
way
that
they
handle
the
online
gambling
industry
as
it
pertains
to
their
country.
The
government
is
looking
into
the
online
gambling
industry
to
see
what
steps
they
need
to
be
taking
to
regulate
and
monitor
them.
The
Assembly
has
several
legislative
documents
currently
under
review
in
regards
to
the
online
gambling
community
and
industry.
The
Assembly
is
looking
into
monitoring
the
fair
treatment
of
online
gambling
players,
as
there
has
been
much
talk
of
fraud
and
crime
associated
with
the
industry.
There
is a
memorandum
that
is
attached
to
the
drafted
National
Gambling
Amendment
bill
that
accuses
the
online
gambling
industry
of
corruption
and
offering
little
to
no
protection
for
its
players.
Because
of
this
widespread
corruption,
there
has
been
a
“considerable
loss
of
revenue
to
the
fiscus.”
They
are
also
concerned
with
the
country’s
reputation
as
it
pertains
to
online
gambling,
and
how
they
will
be
viewed
in
the
global
community.
They
say
that
their
reputation
is
at
stake,
as
is
the
online
gambling
industry’s
reputation
as
well.
The
new
bill
includes
the
protection
of
minors
and
others
deemed
vulnerable
by
online
gambling,
so
that
they
cannot
be
exploited,
and
dictates
exactly
what
kind
of
advertising,
licensing,
compliance,
etc.
will
be
dealt
with.
They
will
also
look
into
problems
with
online
gambling
and
money
laundering.
The
bill
calls
for
interactive
games
as
well
as
having
players
register
so
that
they
can
offer
dispute
resolution
among
other
things.
