| GamblingPhD menu | Sports Betting Bill Gets Approval August 26, 2008 A new bill that will essentially be going after online sports betting is being supported by the Remote Gambling Association, or RGA. The bill looks as though it might be making online sports betting illegal as it is seeking to clarify what the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, is actually targeting. The RGA is a large European group that works basically for online gambling sites in the UK and Europe, and they say that the bill will open doors that were once closed. HR 6663 otherwise known as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Clarification and Implementation Act of 2008 will be clarifying what is legal and what is illegal under the UIGEA. However, many are upset with the RGAs support of the bill. They say that the idea that this would make online poker somehow legal is skewed at best. The Poker Players Alliance shunned the bill saying that they dont even understand why it is being introduced or what it is for. The PPA says that the bad part of the bill is that it asserts that online poker is illegal and that they need special protection from prosecution. They allege that this is only making the matter of the UIGEA even more confusing that it was before. They say that the European firms dont understand how online gambling and the political process in the US work and that they should basically keep their nose out of it. Back to August 08 Archive. |
