Now How Does That Work?

August 28, 2009

The online gambling industry has their own issues with the things that go on in terms of how the United States deals with the industry as a whole. However, how does that work when it comes to other countries is the real question. How do they prosecute those people who are offering online gambling to their residents when they don’t live in the country and are not a resident or a citizen of the country? Especially if they are offering it from a country that allows online gambling.

Let’s say that someone in China is offering online gambling to the people in the US – well, they are in trouble both in the US and in China because both countries do not allow online gambling. But what if someone in say Antigua is offering online gambling to a US customer – where does their scope of influence end and where does it begin? Antigua isn’t going to have a problem with the export – as it is legal there.

Many online gambling sites are not allowing US customers to participate because they know that they don’t want the hassle of dealing with their laws and they don’t want to have to worry about getting paid. But there are those that do, and the US feels as though they have the right to go after these people and enforce their laws upon them. They have made arrests of people offering their online gambling services when those people have come on US soil, and they seem to be laying in wait for them.

The question remains though – what if someone breaks the law in another country? Will that country be willing to extradite their resident because of something that is legal in their country? So far the US has grabbed them while they were in the US or passing through, but they have one gentleman in Canada who they want and everyone is waiting to see if they are going to try and have him extradited or even if Canada will comply.
