French Government Cracking Down on Unauthorized Online Gambling

August 12, 2009

There are those within the online gambling industry that feel that they can get a head start on getting into the online gambling market, but the French are keeping an eye out for them. They say that the country is not quite ready for online gambling yet and that they had better wait until they give the official go ahead on the moves.

Some online gambling companies have tried to initiate some promotional and advertising moves before the laws have been officially changed to allow them. But the government says that they had better stop pressing their luck or they will be in serious trouble from them. The government says that they will not let any attempts to break the online gambling laws unchallenged.

The Ligue deFootball Professional told the Olympique Lyonnais football club that they had better remove their sponsorship branding that was associated with online gambling and if they didn’t they would have to stop playing. The football club had entered into an agreement with an online gambling company to sponsor them and they said that if they did not comply the contest would be canceled and they would have to go through an appeal process that it could take months to see results from.

The government says that they are on target to get online gambling legalized in the country again, and that it should happen in January of 2010. But they said that they won’t stand for anyone trying to jump the gun on it.
