Sports Betting and Online Gambling
August 12, 2009
With all the talk about legalizing online gambling and poker the idea of sports betting has really been sent to the back and no one really discusses it except to say that they are not concerned with it at the moment. However, the bills that have come forth to make online gambling legal again specifically say that sports betting is not to be included in that and that they are concerned with the type of online gambling that exists at the online casinos – blackjack, poker, slot machines, etc.
But now there is some dissention within the ranks where there are states that are considering bringing in sports betting within their borders and they say that they are all for this form of online gambling. The National Football League wants it stopped, but then they want all online gambling made illegal. They have threatened Delaware with a lawsuit to keep online gambling illegal – specifically sports betting – and the state has simply told them to bring what they’ve got as they are not backing down.
Those sports groups that are trying to keep online gambling and sports betting illegal say that it “hurts the integrity of the game” but everyone else says nonsense. The fact of the matter is that this is going to go to court and it will be up to a court to say whether or not online gambling is going to be allowed and for both sides to make valid arguments for and against it.
The NFL has said that if they have to they will take away teams from those states that support online gambling and sports betting, but this won’t help anyone and will only hurt the teams. The states say that they can’t threaten to do whatever they want but they are not backing down.
