Online Gambling Supporters Pleased with Pick
August 29, 2009
When Florida Governor Charlie Crist announced that he was considering leaving the state to look to higher positions within the federal government, many were wondering where this would leave the state. There were those that loved him, but many did not because of the compact that he had tried to sign with the Seminoles. Many legislators were not pleased with the move, but Crist was determined to support the tribe and get something for the state in the interim.
But with him leaving, they were wondering where that would leave them in terms of gambling – but it would seem that their worries were for naught. Gambling support will continue within the state, as Crist is staying where he is and has named George LeMieux to the empty Senate seat that was Mel Martinez’s spot.
LeMieux is very pro online gambling which makes many people very excited. They are hoping that he will find it within himself to be a part of the online gambling bill that Rep. Barney Frank is trying to get passed that would overturn the UIGEA. The addition of this member of Congress is sure to tip the favor to the online gambling advocates as Florida now throws their support behind it as well.
LeMieux is also in favor of online gambling legislation that has been proposed by Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey that would specifically target poker playing and making that legal online. With someone like LeMieux on their side it is bound to get much easier to pass those bills.
