Taxing Online Gambling
August 31, 2009
It should not come as too big of a shock that one more country would now be seeking to tax the online gambling that is going on under their roof. The economy has forced many countries that would not have ever even considered allowing online gambling to exist never mind taxing it – but yet here we are with more and more of them doing it.
The latest to fall is Costa Rica. The country currently has no real regulations or taxes on the online gambling industry, which is why so many of them have set up shop there. They know that any other country – for the most part – is going to charge them tons of money and start telling them how to do business.
Needless to say, the online gambling industry is very upset that the country is considering taxation and they say that they don’t understand what they are doing. Experts within the online gambling world say that taxing them will change a lot about the industry that they will not want to see happen. They say that the online gambling industry currently employs more than ten thousand people, all of whom they pay above average salaries to. They say that taxation of online gambling revenues could change all of that.
Many people are worried that by taxing the online gambling industry that many of them will choose to leave – thus seriously hurting their people and their economy. They say that the only reason that as many online gambling companies are there is because there is no tax.
