No Tennis Twittering
August 31, 2009
The Tennis Association is worried about tweets – not the birds of course, but the ever present Twitter that has seemingly taken over the world. However, the Tennis Association is more than happy to enter the 21st century when it comes to pretty much everything but Twitter.
The problem is that they are worried about tweets and online gambling matching up. They say that it is better for the integrity of the sport if they do not allow any interaction between Twitter and those that are playing the US Open as they say that it is not safe and secure.
They say that they are afraid of corrupting influences from the online gambling world will be able to influence the outcome of the tennis matches, and therefore they need to keep them completely separate from each other. They say that if they find someone tweeting – they will be in violation of the rules against corruption and online gambling.
Athletes arrived at the US Open to see signs that said that it was not allowed and that it would not be permitted. They said that they need to keep clean the information that is going out – so that there is no reporting as to player conditions, state of mind, etc. which could influence the game and the betting on it.
Tennis has been the first so far to have a problem with online gambling and twittering, but it is expected that there will be others in the future that follow suit and ban it as well.
