Changing
Aladdin welcomes
Culinary Union
December 5
On
Friday, the new owners
of Aladdin came to a
decision to accept the
Culinary Union. This
decisions comes more
than a year after most
of the property's 1,600
porters, maids and
food-service workers
signed union cards.
Officially, t he
Culinary Union became
the union of record for
Aladdin's hotel and
restaurant workers when
the new owners agreed to
accept the union through
a card-check procedure.
The hotel and restaurant
employees signed union
cards over a year ago
but the prior owners had
rejected recognition of
the more than 1,100
signatures.
Back at the very
beginning of September ,
OpBiz LLC, a partnership
including Robert Earl,
the co-founder and chief
executive of Planet
Hollywood International
Inc.; Bay Harbor
Management LC; and
Starwood Hotels and
Resorts Worldwide Inc.,
purchased the Aladdin
out of bankruptcy from
the Sommer Family Trust
and London Clubs
International Plc.
Robert Earl says that
OpBiz LLC started talks
with the Culinary Union
the very same day it
officially purchased the
fledgling casino. Earl
went on to say that all
of the partners and
OpBiz president and
chief executive, Mike
Mecca came to the
conclusion of accepting
the union.
Also, talks
between officials from
Aladdin and the Culinary
Workers Union Local 226
and its subsidiary
Bartenders Union Local
165 are slated to
commence next year to
develop a similar
contract.
F or
now, the touchy and
undecided relationship
between the Aladdin and
the Culinary Union has
become a stable one.
The new owners of
Aladdin really had had
no commitment to allow
the union before
purchasing the property.
The decision could have
gone either way.
The Aladdin is the only
major Strip property
besides the Venetian
that didn't have a
contract with the
Culinary Union.
Three months ago, OpBiz
started the process of
taking over and
transforming the Aladdin
into the very first
Planet Hollywood hotel
and casino. The property
has over 2,500 hotel
rooms. The process will
be complete in the next
year.
The new resort will take
on a similar theme to
Planet Hollywood
resturants by featuring
a movie-like atmosphere.
Earl says that the
property will attract
major names in the
entertainment industry.
