Mayor
urges voters to let
cities decide on
casinos
December 11
Cleveland's own
Mayor Jane Campbell
is pleading her case
to seek permission
for casino gambling
statewide. She says
her case will be
completed on the
premisis of allowing
a city decide for
itself what to
approve.
In the past, voters
in the state of Ohio
have cast off casino
gambling referendums
two different times.
The answer to the
Mayor's proposal for
a November 2005
ballot issue is to
let voters permit
their respective
cities to decide on
the issue of
gambling. She feels
that the plan is
much better than a
yes or no vote to
allow gambling in
Ohio all together.
Campbell says t he
pitch is coming to
light months after
private
negotiations. She
first offered-up the
plan last week. Most
likely, she will
face a primary
election test from
fellow Democrats if
she looks to be
re-elected in 2005.
It is noted that
Campbell has been
conversing with
the
board chairman of
the Convention and
Visitors Bureau of
Greater Cleveland,
the Cuyahoga County
Commissioner and the
Greater Cleveland
Partnership more
than five times
during the last 4
months to make
conversation about
the idea.
As it stands now,
Ohio permits
wagering on horse
races, bingo and a
state lottery, but
not casino gambling.
It is noted that
Ohio Governor Bob
Taft is against
allowing casinos.
