Singapore residents
create online
petition opposing
casinos
December 14
In
Singapore, those against
the creation of a casino
there have begun an
online petition asking
the nation's president
to join their cause. It
is being reported that
three key people have
started the petition to
against the new casino.
A group of people by
the name of
Families Against the
Casino Threat in
Singapore (FACTS) is
backing the petition.
The petition asks
President S.R. Nathan to
make a recommendation to
the government to reject
any type of casino plan
that is proposed.
Arthur Tan is one of the
catalysts of the
petition. He says that
even though a casino
could possibly create
over 4,000 new jobs he
is not in support of any
type of casino. It has
been reported that he
feels that casinos have
a negative impact on the
welfare of families.
More than 150 people
have already signed the
petition. A small amount
considering the general
population in the area.
Among the companies that
have uttered serious
interest in building
casinos in the area is
Harrah's Entertainment
Inc.
Those who are in
favor of building
casinos in Singapore are
quick to point out that
not only are many new
jobs created, but that
big gaming companies
often invest millions of
dollars educating the
public on gambling
addiction.
