Lawmakers
shy away from
gambling session
December 6
Yesterday in West
Virginia, lawmakers came
to the conclusion that
fitting-in
a unique legislative
session just before the
Christmas break isn't
the best way to
authorize local
elections on permitting
casino table games at
the state's four
racetracks.
House Speaker Bob Kiss,
says that he just
doesn't think there is
enough time before
Christmas.
Gov. Bob Wise said on
Friday that he could
call the special session
regarding the table
games on the ballots of
host counties, but he
also stated that he
needs to know that the
Legislature is ready to
take up the issue.
On Suday,
Earl
Ray Tomblin, Senate
President, confirmed
that he has talked to
officials from the
Governor's
administration, and they
are not completely
convinced that the votes
are there yet.
With Governor Wise
leaving office in
January there are
obviously many changes
going on within the
local government. The
new Governor and fellow
Democrat, Joe Manchin
will take his place as
Governor elect. Also on
Sunday, the Legislature
swore in 21 new members,
including two delegates
that won election to the
Senate.
