British Say Online Gambling Should Be Legal

December 18, 2007

The British Government has come out in favor of the United States regulating the online gambling industry as opposed to banning it. They say that by regulating online gambling, not only would they resolve the gambling disputes that have been brought against the company, but that it would also bring them into compliance with trade agreements.

They say that the current administration may be against online gambling, but in the end banning it is not what is in the best interests of the country. Instead of looking at a potential $100 billion international gambling dispute, they could be looking at untold online gambling revenue instead.

Europe and the US do not see eye-to-eye on the issue of online gambling, as the British see the boon that it can be revenue wise for the host country. They are for online gambling because they know that they are getting back billions of dollars in revenue, and the US is allowing that money to go right out their front door.

The ban has not stopped people from online gambling, it only stopped the US government from profiting from it. Residents of the United States are still participating in online gambling as it is not officially illegal for them to do so. All they have done is crippled the financial industry by trying to make them keep people from using their bank accounts to fund it. This doesn’t work obviously as billions are still free flowing from the country.

The government of Britain has stated that they have been very clear in their desire to regulate the online gambling industry, and that the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was basically a mistake. They said that they saw it as a gesture in futility and that they could not only make money off of it and come into compliance with the WTO simply by removing their ban on online gambling.
