Germany
Passing
Online
Gambling
Ban
December
28,
2007
As
of
January
1st
of
next
year,
all
online
gambling
from
operators
outside
of
Germany
will
be
illegal,
and
the
country
is
passing
a
law
that
will
immediately
go
into
effect.
They
say
that
they
needed
at
least
16
German
states
to
sign
with
them
in
order
to
ratify
the
accord,
and
they
got
them.
They
say
that
they
also
know
that
by
New
Year’s
Eve
the
rest
will
follow.
The
country
is
taking
quite
a
risk
in
passing
the
online
gambling
ban,
as
they
are
only
allowing
their
residents
to
participate
in
online
gambling
as
long
as
it
is
with
a
German
company.
The
European
Union
has
been
fighting
them
on
their
already
exclusionary
practices,
and
with
the
passing
of
the
total
ban
they
are
only
going
to
anger
the
other
countries
even
more.
They
are
attempting
to
keep
a
monopoly
on
online
gambling
within
their
own
country,
which
is
against
the
EU
rules
and
regulations.
The
law
was
voted
on
in
mid
December
with
all
of
the
state
legislatures
voting
to
approve
it.
The
new
rules
will
not
expire
until
the
year
2011.
The
new
law
makes
it
illegal
to
participate
in
online
gambling
with
anyone
that
is
not
a
German
company;
illegal
to
advertise
in
regards
to
online
gambling
on
TV
or
the
internet;
print
advertising
is
no
longer
allowed
as
well;
and
ISP’s
will
block
web
sites
that
violate
the
rules
and
the
banks
won’t
process
their
money
transfers.
Most
of
the
online
gambling
companies
say
that
they
are
not
worried
though
because
they
don’t
think
that
the
new
law
will
hold
up
in
court.
They
say
that
they
will
sue
to
get
into
the
country
if
they
have
to,
but
they
don’t
think
that
it
will
be
necessary
to
do
so.
As
the
EU
has
the
power
and
authority
to
sue
the
various
countries
in
order
to
get
them
to
comply
with
their
rulings,
it
is
likely
that
this
is
what
will
have
to
happen
in
order
for
Germany
to
allow
them
in.
