| GamblingPhD menu | Addicts Increase with Worsening Economy December 30, 2008 One of the problems with the economy being is bad as it is, is that a lot of people will turn to things like online gambling to try and make more money. This is sad because it only ends up putting them deeper into debt. It is the rare person who can win at online gambling and not end up worse off than where they started. But now in Scotland they are noticing a large increase in the number of online gambling addicts that are showing up for Gamblers Anonymous meetings. They say that they have had a 20% increase in the number of problem gamblers that have shown up for recent meetings. They also say that as of June they had roughly 750 online gambling addicts showing up, and now that number is closer to 900. They say that with online gambling being so prolific that they are finding more young people losing their wages on gambling. The number of those calling the hotline has increased from 60 to 120 per month. They also think that the numbers are only going to get worse from here, which only makes the amount of debt higher in the country. Alex Crawford, a CE of the RCA Trust says that they expect to see a lot more problem gamblers coming to them for help. They say that when people start to panic over a lack of funding they then turn to alternative ways of making money. The sensible ways of getting out of debt have left them, so now they are focused on online gambling instead. Back to December 08 Archive. |
