| GamblingPhD menu | Experts Say Regulation Imminent December 13, 2008 The University of Las Vegas gets a lot of calls regarding online gambling. Their proximity to one of the largest places in the world to go gambling, makes them an expert of sorts on the topic. Even if online gambling and casinos are two different topics, the professors at the college are well versed in the lay of the land when it comes to gambling. Bo Bernhard, the director of gambling research at UNLV says that if the purpose of a recent 60 Minutes report was to scare people off of online gambling, it probably did the opposite. In fact, Bernhard says that it simply made the case for online gambling regulation stronger than it had been before. Bernhard says that the report showed the victimization of online gambling customers and the fraud that has been perpetrated upon them. This only made most people more sympathetic to the online gambling plight not turn them off of it. The news media has now shown that the ban of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act has not shown that they are stopping online gambling, it is simply showing that citizens are not being protected by their government. The report shows that with this latest report, compiled with the recent climate for repealing the UIGEA that online gambling will surely be legalized and regulated before we know it. He says that online gambling is really only illegal because of the Republican ties to the Christian right and now that the Democrats are in office it will not be so heavy handed on the church part of church and state.
