| GamblingPhD menu | Keeping Out Online Gambling December 9, 2008 The U.S. Open wanted to make sure that online gambling would not have a place at their table, so they took extra security measures before and during the tournament. The US Tennis Association made sure that their image was not tarnished by using extra security to ensure that the access to the Open wasnt too open. They like the fact that they have a good, clean image, and to ensure that it stayed that way, they didnt allow anyone to have access to online gambling sites. They added web filtering to the network that supported the event, so that players and attendees could not access any online gambling sites. The event was held at the Billie Jean Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, N.Y. They wanted to make sure that there could be no speculation as there was a little over a year ago regarding a match that may or may not have been thrown. The rumor had many questioning the validity of the sport and how it related to online gambling. With more than 21,000 people bound to be at the US Open it was important to keep that secure network access secure. They said that even though it is really just a perception thing as there is no way of knowing whether the match was thrown or not, it is better to completely lock down online gambling and then there isnt anything to worry about. They used St. Bernard Software's iPrism Web filter because it was easy to install and it let them do what they wanted. Back to December 08 Archive. |
