Is Regulation Safe?

December 12, 2008

There has been a lot of talk lately of how the government will be able to better protect their residents if they legalize online gambling. The idea is that if online gambling is regulated in the states, the country will be able to keep them safe from those who do not comply to the rules.

A recent report from 60 Minutes showed the cheating that was going on in the online gambling industry, and that there wasnt really anyway to prosecute those that took advantage of the unsuspecting as it was illegal to participate in the first place. Online gambling advocates say that there are many things that could be done to help them if only they regulated the industry.

One thing that many agree on is that online gambling should be regulated if people are going to participate and since online gambling as a sport has not ceased since the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, it is safe to say that there isnt much that can be done about stopping it. So what is left? Regulation, perhaps?

But there is more at stake than just regulation of online gambling. By regulating it there is now the ability to tax it and make some serious money off of it as well. Some want to know if regulation will make it safer and the answer is yes for the online gambling sites would be responsible for those that cheat on their sites. Instead of simply kicking them off when they are caught, they would be prosecuted and held accountable for their actions.
