ND House supports
regulations for
Internet poker
February 24
In North Dakota,
the
mere idea of
regulating Internet
poker sites was the
hot topic Wednesday
in the state House,
even though North
Dakota's
constitution would
have to be changed
to allow the sites
to reorganize here
from their current
offshore locals.
Rep. Jim Kasper,
R-Fargo, sees the
companies as a
potential cash cow
of licensing income.
To put things
into perspective,
Kasper stated that
if
only 200, or 1/10th
of the now existing
poker sites offshore
relocated to North
Dakota each would
produce $200,000 in
licensing fees
alone. Kasper's
proposed legislation
would require
individual players
to be licensed as
well.
On Wednesday,
Representatives
voted 49-43 to
support the
legislation. It
would not take
effect unless North
Dakota voters
supported a
constitutional
amendment to permit
state licensing of
Internet poker
sites. At this time,
the House has not
acted on the
amendment.
Rep. Klemin,
R-Bismarck, stated
that an Internet
poker site would
meet the necessities
of Kasper's bill by
establishing a
single computer in
the state of North
Dakota. Because of
this, many opponents
don't see much room
for job growth.
