Online
Gambling
Woes
February
9,
2008
It
seems
that
whenever
someone
comes
up
with
a
great
idea,
there
is
someone
there
to
take
advantage
of
that
idea
and
attempt
to
profit
off
of
it.
Online
gambling
and
virtual
online
gambling
are
simply
the
latest
victims
in
what
some
call
attacks
from
“cyber-mafiosi.”
The
scam
is
fairly
simple.
They
inundate
an
online
gambling
website
with
spam,
and
then
when
the
site
cannot
run
fast
because
of
all
of
the
activity
they
ride
in
on
white
horses
and
attempt
to
“fix”
the
problem.
They
extort
cash
from
these
online
casinos
and
virtual
casinos
because
they
can.
When
it
first
started
many
of
the
online
gambling
sites
had
no
idea
and
would
take
these
hooligans
at
their
word
and
they
would
fix
the
site.
However,
now
that
more
and
more
sites
are
seemingly
on
to
them,
so
are
the
feds.
There
are
two
major
investigations
pending
against
these
criminals,
and
Britain’s
National
Hi-Tech
Crime
Unit
is
investigating.
They
have
the
ability
to
spam
a
site
so
that
they
are
getting
millions
of
messages
and
requests,
so
much
so
that
they
cannot
function
and
could
possibly
crash
from
the
inundation
of
mail.
They
have
targeted
smaller
companies
that
they
thought
might
pay,
as
well
as
larger
companies
such
as
Microsoft.
However,
because
the
larger
companies
have
a
way
of
battling
it
now,
they
are
going
after
the
smaller
online
casinos
instead.
They
usually
pick
the
busiest
time
for
the
online
casino,
usually
a
Saturday
or
Sunday
–
and
then
hit
them
with
millions
of
pieces
of
mail.
They
then
demand
payment
or
the
attack
will
continue.
Many
pay
because
they
don’t
know
what
else
to
do,
but
others
will
wait
it
out
at
the
expense
of
their
company
and
the
loss
of
clients
who
may
never
come
back.
