US Could Beat Bullet

February 27, 2009

The European Commission has announced that they have completed their investigation into the online gambling controversy that surrounds the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA. They have maintained that the UIGEA went against trade agreements that the US had set up with the various countries and with the World Trade Organization. Now they are set to release their findings and take them to the WTO to start possible sanctions and penalties against the US.

However, they are giving the US one last chance to make all right with the world by giving them a grace period. They said that they are willing to hold off on pursuing the online gambling matter if the US agrees to overturn the UIGEA. This is the perfect opportunity for the US to fix the wrong that was made when the act was originally passed.

Rep. Barney Frank is looking at legislation that would make online gambling both legal and regulated and would save us from having to worry about the consequences that would undoubtedly come from the WTO and the EU ganging up against us.

We have long maintained that the other countries must abide by the code of the WTO and that their word is law, until of course it came down to us being the ones breaking our word. Then it became very apparent that we thought what was good for the goose was not good for the gander and that we did not have to follow our own advice. It is high time we started being a country that leads others to do the right thing not just when it is easy, but all the time.
