| GamblingPhD menu | Finland Feeling Push February 20, 2009 Finland has long been against online gambling. They feel that it is a detriment to their society to allow it in large doses, but do allow it within their borders. They let residents participate in online gambling through Veikkas because they know that they can control how much people participate in online gambling. They want to ensure the safety of the information that their residents give over the internet for the purpose of online gambling, but they also want to make sure that someone is not getting themselves into trouble. However, the European Commission says that by just allowing online gambling within their country they have created a monopoly which is just really against the rules. They say that Finland needs to open their borders and allow online gambling from across Europe and to stop using online gambling safety as an excuse. They say that online gambling within the EU is safe and that Finland is simply using this as an excuse to get away with their monopoly. They want them to allow others to participate and they want them to stop prosecuting those that allow Finland residents to participate in online gambling at casinos outside of the country. There are stiff penalties involved with those that attempt to operate within the countrys borders. The EU has given Finland two months to comply and open their borders. They were told to do so before but they chose not to comply and instead made their penalties even stiffer which made many in the EU very nervous. |
