| GamblingPhD menu | National Problem Gambling Week February 20, 2009 Call me a skeptic or a bore if you want, but it just seems that everywhere you turn these days there is a day or a week for something. In the old days it used to be major holidays only Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Fourth of July, etc. Now, there is National Grandparents Day, National Take Your Kid to Work Day, National Stop Smoking Day, and now National Problem Gambling Awareness Week. However, unlike some of these holidays that we simply pay lip service to, the gambling week one is actually a pretty good one. Problem gambling has become a very real issue in the United States and one that will not be fixed easily. With the advent of online gambling many said that it made it harder for those that had quit to stay on the wagon because the temptation was so great. By making a gambling awareness week they made people think about how much online gambling influences their lives. According to the supports of the week, it made them see that online gambling is not as harmless as they once thought. They say that many states have taken steps to make online gambling less destructive than it could be, but there are still many risks that have to be overcome. They say that not only is it tough when live casinos themselves are spreading across the nation, but when online gambling is in your living room how do you get away from it? They know that by bringing awareness about online gambling and gambling problems that more people will stop and think before playing, and that is one of their biggest goals. |
