| GamblingPhD menu | Online Gambling Raids Closer to Home February 20, 2009 We have been reading about the various illegal online gambling that has been going on in countries around the world. There was just a big online gambling raid that took place in Malaysia, where many think they are even stricter about it than we are here in the United States. However, just recently there was a rather large online gambling raid in Virginia that many were shocked to hear about. In Martinsville, Virginia, it was discovered that there was an online gambling ring going on in four different internet cafs. Officials say that the possibility of these online gambling establishments making hundreds of thousands of dollars was not far fetched. They said that they had received a tip about them and spent months researching and making sure that they had the evidence that they needed. The raid netted almost $3,000 in cash from the four locations as well as 66 computers that were used for online gambling. They took office equipment and executed four search warrants. Police said that those interested in playing at the online gambling caf would simply go and purchase a any amount that they wanted. The money was transferred to tokens, and they used those to play the online gambling machines that had been set up. Then when they won they were paid out in cash. They said that they did not know if they were using credit cards or not to fund their online gambling. So far no arrests have been made, but they say that they are not finished with their investigation. Back to February 09 Archive. |
