China Cracking Down on
Online Gambling

It is no secret that the
Chinese government is fully against the legalization of online gambling.
They have put many different checks and balances in place in an attempt
to halt all online gambling, but as of yet they have been unable to do
so. The government admits that there is still a large portion of the
population out there participating in online gambling.
Online gambling, and gambling period, has been illegal in the country
since 1949 when the Communist Party came to power. However, this has
never stopped people from gambling anyway. When online gambling became
popular, their citizens turned to that as a way of entertaining
themselves.
The Chinese government was outraged as they saw it as a blatant
disregard for their laws, and banned online gambling from their country.
However, they say that they are no longer sitting back and watching it
happen. They have announced that they are now setting forth on a
crackdown on the online gambling industry that will last until August.
They are planning on eradicating online gambling from the country and
will not stop until they do.
They are using several large governmental agencies to assist them in
getting rid of it, and they say that they are planning on busting “a
number of syndicates from home and abroad that collude to organize
gambling activities on the Internet and severely punish the illegal
rings.” They are ready to prosecute as need be, and the six month
investigation will be extended if necessary.
