Loto-Quebec Ready for Online Gambling

February
9, 2010

The online gambling market is quickly growing in size. Many companies that years ago would not have thought twice about being a part of it have jumped on the band wagon in order to get their foot in the door of an ever increasing market. We especially see this in the United States where with the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, many online gambling companies fled the US market. It also acted as a deterrent to those that might have been considering entering it – but now that it looks as though online gambling will be legalized and regulated, more and more companies are joining the industry or at least looking into it.

The same goes for many companies in Quebec. There are those that have felt that the online gambling market has been getting so large that it would be worthwhile for the Loto-Quebec company to be a part of it. They think that the lottery is missing out on a great opportunity to gain some more revenue from the source. Reports have Canadians spending $675 million on online gambling in 2008 and they expect that they will be spending somewhere in the vicinity of one billion dollars by 2012.

They say that this would be a good move for the company, and they have submitted an online gambling proposal which the provincial cabinet is now looking over. With things moving forward as quickly as they seem to be, it is expected that they will be a part of the online gambling market within the next few months. They won’t be the first province to offer online gambling though, as that honor went out to the British Columbia Lottery Corporation and the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.
