Online Gambling Needs to Worry About Crime

January 13, 2009

According to Michael Franzese the online gambling industry is in for much corruption and illegal activity if it isnt legalized and regulated. Franzese is the ex boss of the Colombo family, one of the New York Five Families that ran the citys organized crime. Franzese says that the online gambling industry is looking at getting into a world of trouble because there are no checks and balances especially when it comes to sports.

Franzese says that the big sports like tennis, NBA, MLB, etc. are all prone to corruption. He says that The Association of Tennis Professionals have formed strong ties with the online gambling industry and are therefore less likely to have problems. They knew that when big tennis matches were coming that they would have to make sure that there was no communication with any of their players and anyone who had ties to the online gambling world. This way they kept their sporting events above reproach.

Franzese says that the most important thing to remember is that most of those that participate in a sport do not want to throw games, etc. because they want to win. However, through extortion, blackmail, and other means, there are ways for the online gambling community to corrupt the system. He says that the players always regret it after they have done it, but felt like they had no choice at the time.

He says that there are safeguards that the online gambling industry could put into play that would protect the sporting industry from corruption. There are people who can watch betting patterns and by utilizing them with law enforcement they can make sure that no one else is victimized by this type of corruption.
