| GamblingPhD menu | Adding Gambling to Kentucky? January 21, 2009 There seems to be some confusion in Kentucky these days. Most people were of the impression that all online gambling was going to be illegal in the state, but now it seems that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, it would seem that Kentucky is actually looking to get into expanding the gambling business in the state. Greg Stumbo, Speaker of the House in the Kentucky State Legislature, has released a measure that would allow slot machines to Kentucky Racetracks. This has some confused as Governor Steve Beshear is currently looking to seize the online gambling domain names of more than 100 online sites, so one would think that he was against online gambling. The fact of the matter is that Beshear is not against gambling, he simply is trying to keep tax dollars in the state, instead of overseas. He thinks that if they can keep residents from participating in online gambling then they can keep the revenue in the state and in much needed programs. The two dont really have anything to do with each other, as one seeks to stop online gambling and the other seeks to implement a new kind of gambling that will bring in more revenue for the state. But gamblers want to be able to gamble from their homes with online gambling and not have to go to the track, and Beshear finds this the biggest problem. He knows that the state needs to bring in more gambling to keep residents happy, and to pay for much needed programs. |
