Obama May Have Opened a Can of Worms

January 22, 2009

President Elect Barack Obama has a website where he takes suggestions as to things that are important to the citizens of the United States. On this site it is apparent that one of the things that is really bugging people is the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, and they want to know when it will be overturned.

The site: http://citizensbriefingbook.change.gov/home has a ton of threads running on it that say that online gambling should be legalized, and they want it to be a priority of the US government to make it so. Obamas party has said that they will look into it, but at no time during his run for the Presidency did he say that he would do anything about it.

The Poker Players Alliance is also calling for the UIGEA to be overturned, saying that it is high time that those that want to participate in online gambling be allowed to do so. This has become a bone of contention for many as they say that this was why they voted for him and they want online gambling to be a priority. However, the only people who talked about online gambling during the campaign were the Republicans who said they would not make it legal.

Does this mean Obama is not going to work on regulating online gambling? We dont know because he has not told us one way or the other. One can be sure though, that he is not necessarily focusing on the plight of online gambling instead he is looking at the economy and the war and trying to figure those out. Online gambling may just have to wait its turn.
