| GamblingPhD menu | Really? January 12, 2009 So now that President Bush is leaving, we here cant help but think that perhaps this latest story isnt a bit, well, how does one say, made up? A recent release by security analysts says that they have discovered that terrorists are laundering money through several online gambling sites. I dont know something about timing? The reason for the skepticism is that the original idea behind the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, or Safe Port Act of 2006 whatever you want to refer to it as is that online gambling needed to be made illegal because terrorists were using these sites to lauder money. Not only do we not believe that this is the case, although I suppose it could be, it seems like one more attempt at bringing fear to the US before Bush leaves office. To make us think that everything he has done has been on the up and up after all, here are those pesky terrorists laundering money, just like he said they would. The issues that follow with an announcement like this is that there is so much doubt related to it that no one knows whether to believe him or not. He said there were weapons of mass destruction we havent seen them. He said terrorists were using online gambling to launder money and well, we still havent really seen that. So are they using the online gambling sites to launder money I dont know that we will ever know, simply because we have come to believe that the reports that come from our government simply are not true. So where does that leave us? Back to January 09 Archive. |
