Florida measure to go before voters
July 26
A proposal to let South Florida voters
decide whether or not they want to permit slot machines at
jai alai, dog and horse tracks was signed on Friday.
This means that in November this proposed
constitutional amendment will go before voters.
The State Supreme Court has decided
already that the measure is explained fairly and that the
summary in the ballot title clearly deals with only one
subject.
The state Division of Elections Web page
states that the measure has almost 512,000 signatures. The
amount of signatures required is 488,722.
If this measure is approved statewide, the
measure will let governing boards in Miami-Dade and Broward
counties ask voters whether or not they want to permit slot
machines at the racetracks and jai alai establishments.
Track owners consider this measure pivotal
in the future success of their tracks. With such competition
stemming from Indian casinos, many track and jai alai owners
feel that to keep race tracks thriving they need to expand
their options. Many feel that the proposed constitutional
amendment is in fact a question of local control.
In the past 25 years Florida voters have
voted against similar measures three times.
