Online casino wagers set for hurricane betting

July 1, 2006

Just when we thought there may not be anything more interesting to bet on as far as non casino game wagers go, online casinos are offering odds on this year’s hurricane season. Have we taken lucky and statistics too far here? It is in poor taste to bet on whether a hurricane will make landfall in a certain area – or just how many of them will hit land? Apparently not – online casinos players seem to be adding bets in this category.

At online casinos these days, we have all noticed an influx of non casino game wagering. Some pop culture events have taken a front seat to many sporting events at online sportsbooks as far as wagering goes. Is it really any wonder to us that this should be happening? After all, in the US, we are a society hell bent on reality shows and we certainly like a good story. Why not bet on these instances. After all, we bet on who would be the next Supreme Court judge in the past year. Now, with hurricane season heating up, it seems the focus is now on betting the when, where and why.

At some online casinos, players can wager on how many named storms and hurricanes will form in this current hurricane season.  Players can bet on the strength of these storms and more. Will a Category 5 storm make landfall in the United States? How many Category 3 storms will form during this year's hurricane season? The list goes on.

Many victims from last year’s hurricanes have said that they believe wagering on fate on this level can be in poor taste. Others are betting to win back some of the money they spent in home repairs from last year. Whatever the case, the wagers are offered and players are betting.

Wagerweb.com, one site offering hurricane related odds says that they did not offer (and never will offer) any wagers on deaths or destruction to stay within the lines of better taste. When this online casino wagering site developed its hurricane related odds it made sure to steer away from such personal situations. Wagerweb.com says it has taken well over a thousand bets from hurricane related wagers already.

In fact, it is mentioned by players at the site that most people betting on the hurricane odds are actually living in hurricane ravaged areas or areas where the storms would typically hit. After all, these are the people to tend to pay more attention to such things anyway – right?
